Language teaching

Designing in-class communicative activities, especially …

• activities that promote fluency in speech and writing
• short in-class writing exercises that lead to topically enriched speaking
• activities for mixed-level classes.

Linking language and movement so as to update and generalize Total Physical Response for wider and more spontaneous use, even at advanced level.

Implementing a ‘memory oriented’ Lexical Approach so as to help learners not just recognize items of phrasal vocabulary (or ‘lexical chunks’) but give them improved chances of remembering them for instant use in speech and fluent writing.

(Applied) linguistics

Lexicology
• Prepositions
• Words whose meanings have motoric (or kinaesthetic) character – e.g., ‘manner-of-movement’ words such as sway.
• Polysemy from a historical perspective
• Phrasal vocabulary

Verbal memory
In recent decades especially, cognitive scientists have learned a great deal about verbal memory. Uptake of these findings within the fields of second and foreign language teaching has been poor.
A recent interest of mine has been doing my bit to rectify this.
